West Harwich Baptist Church

Historic Preservation Project

This 3D model documents the historic West Harwich Baptist Church, a landmark structure in West Harwich, Massachusetts, originally constructed in 1841. The Greek Revival church is located at 62 Route 28, according to records from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.

The congregation itself dates much earlier. Formed in 1757, it is considered the oldest Baptist faith community on Cape Cod and originally met in North Harwich.

Recently purchased by developer John Carey, the building is being restored and adaptively reused as the West Harwich Meetinghouse. The project focuses on preserving the historic landmark while transforming it into a community-centered gathering space. The church features notable architectural elements, including 1897 French stained-glass windows, which remain an important part of the building’s historic character and preservation effort.

Once restored, the building will serve as a community cultural center, hosting events such as lectures, concerts, performances, community gatherings, and private events.

The redevelopment plan prioritizes preservation and restoration, particularly of the church’s exterior and its iconic clock tower, which are protected by a deed restriction preventing demolition. Once completed, the restored building will operate as the West Harwich Meetinghouse, a venue designed to bring the community together through lectures, concerts, cultural events, fundraisers, and private gatherings such as weddings and celebrations. The space will also continue to host Sunday services through an agreement with the First Baptist Church Society.

To support the long-term stewardship of the property, Carey and several local residents formed a nonprofit organization called Friends of Harwich, whose mission is the preservation of historic assets in the area. The restoration effort is expected to cost approximately $1.41 million, with the project planned in three phases: pre-construction, exterior preservation, and interior restoration. Funding support is being pursued through the town’s Community Preservation Act historic preservation funds.

The West Harwich Baptist Church stands as a centerpiece of the village, and once restoration is complete, the revitalized meetinghouse is intended to serve as a lasting community landmark for generations to come.
